TEXTO:
Dengue Vaccine
The Brazilian government has authorized the
country’s first dengue vaccine, produced by the French
laboratory Sanofi Pasteur. It is expected to be on sale
within three months. The Ministry of Health says that it
[5] is considering provision of the vaccine on the public health
system, and that such plans are “priority”, but it still
expressed some reservations about the vaccine.
The vaccine, which has already been authorized in
Mexico and the Philippines, is aimed at the 9 to 45 age
[10] range. It is administered in three doses, six months apart,
and has a total efficacy rate of 66%. The laboratory Sanofi
Pasteur says that price will depend on the government’s
provision strategy. Marcelo Castro, the minister of health,
says that cost is a “problem”. He suggested it may cost
[15] as much as -20 (R$ 84) per dose.
Jarbas Barbosa, president of the National Health
Surveillance Agency, said in May that its efficacy is
“limited”, and that a break of six months between each
dose “would not prevent infection.” Moreover, University
[20] of São Paulo infectologist Esper Kallás is critical of the
fact that the vaccine is not available for young children
and the elderly — the two groups most at risk of serious
cases of dengue. However, Sheila Homsani, Sanofi
Pasteur medical director, argues that 70% of Brazil’s
[25] dengue cases affect the age range for which the vaccine
will be available.
Brazil registered 1.58 million probable cases of
dengue up to the start of December — nearly three times
the figure for the same period in 2014.
Considering the vaccine availability,
[1] Identity is about belonging, about what
you have in common with some people and
what differentiates you from the others. At its
most basic it gives you a sense of personal
[5] location, the stable core to your individuality.
But it is also about your social relationships,
your complex involvement with others, and in
the modern world these have become even
more complex and confusing. Each of us lives
[10] with a variety of potentially contradictory
identities, which battle within us ........
allegiance: as men or women, black and
white, straight or gay, able-bodied or
disabled. The list if potentially infinite, and so
[15] therefore are our possible belongings. Which
of them we focus on, bring to the fore,
“identify” with, depends on a host of factors.
At the center, however, are the values we
share with others.
[20] Identities are not neutral. ........ the quest
for identity are different, and often conflicting
values. By saying who we are, we are also
striving to express what we are, what we
believe and what we desire.(…)
[25] All this makes debates over values
particularly fraught and delicate: they are not
simply speculations ........ the world and our
place in it; they touch on fundamental, and
deeply felt issues about who we are and what
[30] we want to become. They also pose political
questions: how to achieve reconciliation
between our collective needs as human
beings and our specific needs as individuals
and members of diverse communities, how to
[35] balance the universal and the particular.
These are not new questions, but they are
likely, nevertheless, to loom ever-larger as we
engage with the certainty of uncertainty that
characterizes ‘new times’.
[40] The basic issue can be stated ........
simply: by what criteria can we choose
between the conflicting claims of differences?
To ask the question immediately underlines
the poverty of our thinking about this. Can
[45] the rights of a group obliterate the rights of
an individual? Should the morality of one
sector be allowed to limit the freedom of
others? To what extent should one particular
definition of the good and the just prevail
[50] over others? These are ancient questions, but
the alarming fact is that one still lacks a
common language for addressing them, let
alone resolving them.

Migrant crisis: Hamburg uses shipping containers as homes
Dust blows across the path as women carry what possessions they have in flimsy blue bin bags. One calls out to a little boy on a bicycle but her words are lost in the sound of loud drilling and hammering.
Workmen are still building this site and these are some of Hamburg's newest refugee homes, with room for just over 200 people. All around are converted shipping containers: functional metal boxes painted red and stacked two storeys high. New tenants are already moving in. A family invites us inside. Yusef is an energetic young man who introduces his wife, a shy pregnant woman in a bright pink headscarf, and his little girl. "I didn't like life in Iraq," he tells me. "Maybe I'm killed, maybe my children are killed, maybe my wife is killed. In the markets there are car bombers, in the hospital there are car bombers." The family is waiting to hear whether Germany will give them a home for the long term. It can take up to five months for an asylum application to be processed, although the government has promised to reduce the average waiting time to three months. For now, Yusef and his family live in a single room and share a kitchen and bathroom with the other tenants. His oldest child is now in a German school. He hopes to learn German then get a job. As Yusef makes tentative plans for the future, the authorities in Hamburg are struggling. It's estimated that about 400 refugees and migrants arrive here every day.

Human trafficking is slavery
According to the United States Department of Justice, human trafficking is the “third most profitable criminal activity. An estimated $9.5 billion is generated in annual revenue from all trafficking activities, with at least $4 billion attributed to the worldwide brothel industry.”
The United States Department of State estimates that 800,000 women, children and men are internationally trafficked every year. Most of these victims are enslaved in the sex trade industry, followed by domestic servitude and labor. Over 14,000 victims are trafficked into the United States annually, according to the United States Department of Justice, and an estimated 200,000 American children are potentially trafficked each year into the sex trade.
Since 2001, the United States Department of Health and Human Services has issued almost 1,100 certifications to human trafficking victims in the United States originating from over 40 countries. The largest contributing regions are Latin America and Asia. The majority of victims are female and half of all victims are children. Law enforcement agencies report that the majority of trafficking cases presented as prostitution. But victims of human trafficking have also been rescued from enslavement as domestic servants, child soldiers, child brides, beggars, manual laborers, sweatshops workers, and in landmine removal efforts. There are also baby trafficking rings that sell babies to both knowing and unknowing adoptive parents.
Anyone can potentially fall prey to human traffickers. Before enslavement, many victims earned higher educational degrees. Many victims were professionals. Others were simply seeking a better life when they fell prey. Regardless of demographics or the circumstance of their trafficking, the common thread among all trafficking victims is the deprivation of inherent human rights and dignity. They are frequently subjected to physical, mental, emotional and sexual abuse. Although these victims are a commodity to the traffickers, they are nonetheless considered expendable. They are consequently not given adequate care. Without proper care and essential services, these innocent victims will be less likely to live hopeful, healthy, and productive lives.

Learning Languages Beyond the Classroom
[…] Here are some tips to learn a foreign language, whether that is French, Mandarin or Spanish. Let me first acknowledge that I am by no means a linguist or fluent in French, but these tricks I have found have accelerated my language learning.
· Ditch the textbook and procrastinate.
· Listen, even if that is a mere 10 minutes a day.
· Speak to anyone who is a native speaker.
· Learn that mistakes are okay and work on pronunciation.
· Stop translating word for word.
· Write it down by hand.

should have known better
With a girl like you
That I would love everything
That you do
And I do,
Hey, hey, hey,
And I do
Whoa, oh, I never realized
What a kiss could be
This could only happen to me.
Can’t you see?
Can’t you see?
That when I tell you that I love you, oh,
You’re gonna say you love me too, oh,
And when I ask you to be mine,
You’re gonna say you love me too
So, oh, I should have realized
A lot of things before.
If this is love
You’ve gotta give me more
Give me more,
Hey, hey, hey,
Give me more

The SuperMoro
“The judge, or SuperMoro as he is being referred to by Brazilians, has reignited the flames of a former Brazilian tradition: lynching,” one critic, Eliane Brum, wrote in a newspaper commentary.
Legal scholars say Mr. Moro belongs to a new generation of worldly, well-educated judges and lawyers who came of age during the post-dictatorship period, view themselves as beholden to no politician, and enjoy career protections that empower them to act without fear of reprisal.
A formative lesson for Mr. Moro and others of his generation was Italy’s Clean Hands Operation of the early 1990s, in which a nationwide corruption probe involving thousands of public figures resulted in a massive political purge.
Whatever lies ahead in Brazil’s turbulent political season, Mr. Moro’s colleagues don’t expect him to give in.
“He is not influenced by criticism,” said a person close to Mr. Moro. “It is like he wears a suit of armor. He is undisturbed.”

As football continues to tiptoe around increased use of technology, tennis is boldly exploring where seemingly no sport has gone before.
Indeed a tennis event being staged Tuesday, and not the prestigious Miami Open, could well shape the sport for many years to come.
Hawk-Eye has been used at top-tier tournaments for a decade now but Tuesday evening in Salt Lake City the line calling aid will be used on the PowerShares Series solely instead of linespeople.
And one of the four participants in Utah, former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis, thinks it's a matter of when, not if, tennis at the highest level adopts something similar and does away with linespeople. [...]
