Linguistic imperialism: African perspectives

Abstract

Ninety per cent of the population in Africa today speak only African languages (Ng˜ug˜ı wa Thiong’o, 1992.

p.27).

Seventy per cent of South Africa’s population understand Zulu (Neville Alexander in Bhanot, 1994). There’s no such thing as Nigerian English (Achebe, 1992. p.73). This is a response to a recent article in ELT Journal on aspects of African language policy (Bisong, 1995). Among the points taken up are: research evidence from African scholars; multilingualism and monolingualism; proposed changes in language policy from the Organization for African Unity and in current initiatives in South Africa; the language that literature is written in; bilingual education; and whose interests ELT is serving.

The Labor Market Effects of Immigration

Research does not find a significant impact of overall immigration on unemployment in the UK, but the evidence suggests that immigration from outside the EU could have a negative impact on the employment of UK-born workers, especially during an economic downturn.

Shoes with high heels are the fashion choice for many women around the world. However, a new study by Stanford University in the USA proves that wearing high heels over a long period of time can permanently injure the body. The study by a biomotion team from the University scanned the knees of healthy women as they walked at a normal pace in flat shoes, 1.5 inch heels and 3.5 inch heels. The results send a warning to women who want to wear high heels that they risk permanent damage to their knees. The researchers found that when women wear high heels, their knees are held in an awkward, bent position causing the joints to perform as though aged or damaged joints would – increasing the risk the condition known as osteoarthritis, which could require surgery.

Britain’s Daily Express newspaper reports a recent survey of 1,200 women that shows how popular high heels are. It said 93 per cent of women felt sexier and more feminine when they wore heels, 88 per cent said they considered themselves more stylish and 77 per cent said their heels made them feel slimmer. Most women prefer to ignore health warnings, and even the pain and discomfort of wearing heels, to look and feel good.

A British doctor, Tim Allardyce, said he regularly treats women with problems caused by wearing heels. “Because of the odd angle at which the feet are held in high-heeled shoes, it increases the downward pressure on the knees by 25 per cent, placing significant stress on the kneecaps, even when you’re standing still,” he explains. He added: “Standing and walking on the balls of your feet throws the skeleton out of its usual, healthy alignment, which means muscles and joints throughout the body have to compensate to maintain its centre of gravity and keep the body upright.”

World Blood Donor Day: Voluntary Blood Donations Save Lives
World Blood Donor Day highlights the critical need for voluntary donations of blood and blood products around the world.
Voluntary donations of blood donations are critical to the survival of hospital patients worldwide, especially in areas where there are few resources to provide payment for blood donors. On World Blood Donor Day, events are held around the world to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products, as well as thank blood donors who volunteer their own life-saving gift of blood.
The observance was established in 2003, and has since been held annually on June 14 to honor the birth of Karl Landsteiner, who won the Nobel Prize for establishing the ABO blood group system.
The World Health Organization (WHO)'s goal is for all countries in the world to obtain all their blood supplies from 100% voluntary blood donations by 2020. So far, just 62 countries have met or come close to that goal, with 40 countries dependent upon family and/or paid blood donations. Of the 92 million blood donations collected every year, about half are collected in high-income countries, home to 15% of the world’s population.

Winter Driving

Winter is dangerous because it’s so difcult to know what is going to happen and accidents take place so easily. Fog can be waiting to meet you over the top of a hill. Ice might be hiding beneath the melting snow, waiting to send you of the road. Te car coming towards you may suddenly slide across the road.

Rule Number One for driving on icy roads is to drive smoothly. Uneven movements can make a car suddenly very difcult to control. So every time you either turn the wheel, touch the brakes or increase your speed, you must be as gentle and slow as possible. Imagine you are driving with a full cup of hot cofee on the seat next to you. Drive so that you wouldn’t spill it.

Rule Number Two is to pay attention to what might happen. Te more ice there is, the further down the road you have to look. Test how long it takes to stop by gently braking. Remember that you may be driving more quickly than you think. In general, allow double your normal stopping distance when the road is wet, three times this distance on snow, and even more on ice. Try to stay in control of your car at all times and you will avoid trouble.

Computers \'do not improve\' pupil results, says OECD

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34174796. Acessado em 07/10/2015. Adaptado.

According to the report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), education systems which have invested heavily in information and communications technology have seen "no noticeable improvement" in Pisa test results for reading, mathematicsor science.

Andreas Schleicher, the OECD\'s education director, says school technology had raised "too many false hopes". Commenting on the varied results of the report, he says the impact of technology on student performance is mixed at best.

Here is what the report says:

- Students who use computers very frequently at school get worse results.

- Students who use computers moderately at school, such as once or twice a week, have "somewhat better learning outcomes" than students who use computers rarely.

- The results show "no appreciable improvements" in reading, mathematics or science in the countries that had invested heavily in information technology.

- High achieving school systems such as South Korea and Shanghai in China have lower levels of computer use in school.

- Singapore, with only a moderate use of technology in school, is top for digital skills.
