The Americas are Now Measles-Free
The Americas has become the first region in the world to be free of measles, following a 22-year vaccination drive against the disease which continues to infect tens of thousands of people globally, the Pan American Health Organization said on Tuesday.
The milestone was confirmed after no cases of the highly contagious disease originating in the Americas were recorded in at least three years, the PAHO said.
"This is truly a historic deed," said Carissa Etienne, director of the PAHO, which serves as the World Health Organization's (WHO) regional office for the Americas.
Globally, measles remains a leading cause of death among young children in the developing world. About 250,000 people were infected with measles last year, most in Africa and Asia, the PAHO said.
According to the WHO, the virus that can lead to deadly complications like diarrhea, dehydration, respiratory infection and encephalitis kills an estimated 314 people every day.
The last outbreak of measles that originated in the Americas occurred in Venezuela in 2002, PAHO said. But the region was only declared free of measles this year.
Justin Lessler, an epidemiology expert at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, said imported cases of measles - which remains widespread in other parts of the world - could still lead to small outbreaks in the Americas. "People still need to be vaccinated to maintain elimination," he said.
Before a separate, worldwide vaccination drive against measles began in the 1980s, the disease caused 2.6 million deaths a year worldwide - 12,000 of them in the Americas, according to PAHO.
Measles is the fifth vaccine-preventable disease to be eliminated in the Americas - after smallpox in 1971, poliomyelitis in 1994, and rubella and congenital rubella syndrome in 2015, the PAHO said.

Natural tooth repair method, using Alzheimer's
drug, could revolutionise dental treatments
A new method of stimulating the renewal of living stem cells in tooth pulp using an Alzheimer’s drug has been discovered by a team of researchers at King’s College London.
Following trauma or an infection, the inner, soft pulp of a tooth can become exposed and infected. In order to protect the tooth from infection, a thin band of dentine is naturally produced and this seals the tooth pulp, but it is insufficient to effectively repair large cavities. Currently dentists use manmade cements or fillings, such as calcium and silicon-based products, to treat these larger cavities and fill holes in teeth. This cement remains in the tooth and fails to disintegrate, meaning that the normal mineral level of the tooth is never completely restored.
However, in a paper published today in Scientific Reports, scientists from the Dental Institute at King’s College London have proven a way to stimulate the stem cells contained inthe pulp of the tooth and generate new dentine in large cavities, potentially reducing the need for fillings or cements.
The novel biological approach could see teeth use their natural ability to repair large cavities rather than using cements or fillings.
Significantly, one of the small molecules used by the team to stimulate the renewal of the stem cells included Tideglusib, which has previously been used in clinical trials to treat neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease.
Using biodegradable collagen sponges to deliver the treatment, the team applied low doses of small molecule glycogen synthase kinase (GSK-3) inhibitors to the tooth. They found that the sponge degraded over time and that new dentine replaced it, leading to complete, natural repair. Collagen sponges are commercially-available and clinicallyapproved, again adding to the potential of the treatment’s swift pick-up and use in dental clinics.

THE Youth Offending Service (YOS) is appealing for volunteers to take part in its established mentoring programme. Volunteers are needed for the “The Promise Project” which is a scheme to help youngsters who are, or are in danger of becoming, involved in the criminal justice system. This Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership funded scheme works with 10 to 18 year olds from across the local area and provides positive role models who work with the youngsters to help create positive changes in their lives. Mentors work in a one-to-one relationship with a young person who has signed an Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC), agreeing to stop committing antisocial acts. They voluntarily give time to receive and provide support, guidance and encouragement. The mentors also help young people to occupy their leisure time in a constructive manner and encourage development by helping them find employment or education. Anyone interested in helping to change the life of a local youngster by becoming a mentor, should contact the Blackwood-based Youth Offending Service on 01495235623.
Ellen donates prize tickets to charity
A YOUNG competition winner has donated her prize cinema tickets to a South Wales charity. Ellen King, 12, donated the tickets to see Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian to the Miskin Project. Ellen, from St John Baptist Schoolin Aberdare, won the tickets by taking part in St Tydfil Shopping Centre's design a character competition. The prize tickets were initially meant for Ellen to take her school class, however she kindly thought of the Miskin Project. The Miskin Project supports teenagers who may be considered vulnerable or at risk of harm, the project also offers support to children in foster care. Matthew Free, one of the team at the Miskin Project said “We would really like to offer our thanks to Ellen who donated the tickets”.

The only way we can change the world we live in, is to change the way we think. And a good place to start is by becoming better acquainted with the traditional American Indian beliefs.
To the American Indian, nature is more than a collection of water and landforms, it’s their religion and thus it is treated with the appropriate respect.
In traditional American Indian culture, the children are also raised by the aunts and uncles and elders for Indians believe it’s best for a child to learn from as many people as possible to give them a more well-rounded education.
Indians believe wealth and success only means that you’re able to give more to others, and materialism only removes one further from God.
Most of the international problems occur because one culture becomes intolerant of another. The American Indians, on the other hand, believe all cultures are equally important.
The problem is that the American Indian culture is in danger of becoming extinct and the greatest hope for survival is through the 26 tribal colleges. They were formed to keep the tribal ways alive. More Indians are becoming educated, and tribal pride is increasing. The tribal colleges, though, are struggling financially. Help save a culture that could save ours.

Antony’s lines from Act III, Scene 2 of Julius Caesar
[1] Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is often interred with their bones;
[5] So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Has told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously has Caesar answered it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest–
[10] For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men–
Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
[15] And Brutus is an honourable man.
He has brought many captives home to Rome
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When the poor have cried, Caesar has wept:
[20] Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
[25] Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
[30] You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! you are fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
[35] And I must pause till it come back to me.

You don’t need extra minutes in your day to eat
less or to move more, the two basic pillars of weight
loss. Here’s how to reevaluate the time you do have, and
smart strategies to make dropping pounds easier, no
[5] matter how swamped you are.
Every small step you take toward a healthier lifestyle
matters, says Jeff Katula, PhD, associate professor of
health and exercise science at Wake Forest University.
“People often think they have to spend an hour at the
[10] gym or eat a diet full of hummus and superfoods, and
when they can’t attain that level they just give up and
don’t even try,” he says. Instead of looking at your whole
day as a success or failure, says Katula, consider every
decision you make a chance to do something healthy.
[15] Just because you skipped the gym doesn’t mean you
shouldn’t watch your calorie intake for the rest of the
day, for example. (In fact, it means the exact opposite!)
“You don’t need to cook your own food or even eat
different food to lose weight,” says Katula. “You just need
[20] to eat less.” Most people need to consume between 1,200
and 1,500 calories a day if they want to drop pounds in a
healthy and sustainable way — and for a lot of people,
eating appropriate portion sizes, skipping dessert, or not
going back for seconds is one of the easiest ways to
[25] reduce their total calorie intake.
Not skipping meals is crucial. This may seem
counterintuitive after advice to eat less overall, but busy
people especially may need to space out their calories
more throughout the day. That’s because going more
[30] than four or five hours without refueling can slow
metabolism, affect hormones and insulin levels, and
contribute to unhealthy food choices when you do finally
sit down to eat. “A lot of our overweight patients aren’t
necessarily overeating, but their eating patterns have
[35] become so erratic — they have a cup of coffee in the
morning and then no real food until late afternoon,” he
says. “The key is to avoid that and keep a consistent
schedule, whether that’s three meals a day and a couple
of snacks, or five mini meals.”
Jeff Katula says that, in order to lose weight, people
Transportation Re-imagined
The transportation industry enables more than just a means of getting around. With the advance of high technology, changing consumer priorities, and the increased access to travel for much of the developed world, taking a car or train from point A to point B has evolved in ways not previously imagined. Digital technologies are a key component of the new mobility concept.
Next generation cars that can think for themselves have clear advantages over flesh-and-blood drivers: they don't get drunk or drowsy, daydream or get distracted by mobile phones and squabbling kids. As the driver is taken out of the equation, so too will a large proportion of accidents.
Worldwide, 1.24 million people die each year in road accidents and as many as 50 million are injured. Human error causes over 90 percent of these collisions. Driverless cars, which can sense other vehicles on the road as well as obstacles and lane markings, are already proving much safer than human-driven cars.
Driverless cars use a mix of GPS, cameras, complex scanners and sensors to detect vehicles, traffic signals, curbs, pedestrians and other obstacles. A central computer system analyzes the data to control acceleration, steering and braking. The software can simulate different eventualities to ensure safety on the road - and the results can be incorporated into the design and production process.
As well as detecting their surroundings using ultrasophisticated mapping systems, future cars will be able to communicate with each other, allowing as many cars as possible to fit on the roads. Connected vehicles will feature safety warnings that alert drivers of potentially dangerous conditions - impending collisions, icy roads and dangerous curves.
Experts say it's not the technology slowing our progress, but legal and practical issues such as who is responsible in the case of an accident, urban infrastructure planning, and the security of car computer systems. Once these details are worked out, and manufacturers have used sophisticated software tools to eliminate all potential problems, it won't be long until we're all a lot safer on the roads.
