WHAT IS LOST WHEN A MUSEUM VANISHES? IN BRAZIL, A NATION’S STORY

1 According to the deputy director at the museum, a 200-year-old Rio de Janeiro institution, the fire that

burned down much of the building two weeks ago may have consumed 90 percent of the collection.

3 That’s thousands, maybe millions, of objects — incomprehensible numbers.

4 It’s always easier to think in smaller terms, specific examples. The museum preserved documentation

of indigenous languages for which there are no longer any living native speakers. Every one of those

records apparently went up in smoke, taking with it a culture, a civilization, the story of a life, a chapter

of us.

8 Because that’s what museums like the National Museum ultimately do. They piece together the narrative

of who we are, where we come from, where we belong — in the universe, on this planet, as nations,

communities, individuals.

11 For generation after generation, the National Museum, a repository of science, art and history, has been

where parents passed down to their children what it means to be human and, more specifically, what it

means to be Brazilian.

14 It’s no wonder that the fire became an instant metaphor for the country’s decline. While it was still

burning, crowds gathered at the museum gates. Afterward, a group of students issued a call for any

photographs, videos, even selfies taken with the collection and in the exhibition spaces, to create a digital

archive, a kind of virtual bulwark against forgetfulness.

New Parents Don’t Get Enough Sleep for Six Years After a Child Is Born

Those first three months with a newborn can be rough, but researchers say sleep deprivation is an issue with parents for years. New parents are sometimes shocked to discover how little sleep they get in the first six months after a baby is born. They might also be discouraged to learn that their sleep patterns might not return to normal until that newborn is ready for kindergarten.

A new study published in the journal Sleep found that bothparental sleep satisfaction and sleep duration sharply declined after childbirth, hitting their lowest point when a baby is 3 months old.

Women’s sleep duration and quality were far more affected than men, whether or not they breastfed their child. Women lost an average of one hour of sleep nightly compared to what they got prior to pregnancy, while men lost about 15 minutes of sleep per night.

Even four to six years after childbirth, mothers were getting 20 minutes less sleep per night than before they became pregnant, while fathers were still getting 15 minutes less sleep.

“The short-term effects of childbirth on parental sleep is well known. Our study just confirmed these effects,” Lemola told Healthline. “However, it was largely unexpected to find decreased sleep duration and sleep satisfaction six years after birth.”

Sleep was more affected among first-time parents than among parents with more than one child.

The findings were based on interviews of 4,659 parents who had a child between 2008 and 2015.

“While having children is a major source of joy for most parents, it is possible that increased demands and responsibilities associated with the role as a parent lead to shorter sleep and decreased sleep quality even up to six years after birth of the first child,” said Lemola.

Lemola said that future research would be required to determine how parents can cope with sleep loss and regain their sleep patterns sooner.

Nurse Anthea - There’s an antibiotic called Vancomycin. This is our last weapon against MRSA, but in time it will be useless too. One type of Staphylococcus aureus is now resistant to Vancomycin – so it is VRSA- Vancomycin resistant. There is a possibility of a bacterium which will be resistant to all antibiotics.

We have been winning the war against bacteria for about fifty years, but soon bacteria will make a comeback and we will be where we were in the nineteenth century – with no protection from bacteria.

Do tweens and teens believe “fake news”?

Let's be clear: "Fake news" has always existed. From P.T. Barnum to Ripley's Believe It or Not to supermarket tabloids, selling outrageous ideas has long been a part of our culture. Most kids can tell the difference between the shocking stories they see in the checkout line and the more evenhanded reporting they see on the local TV news.

But today's fake online news sources so closely mimic real news that it's challenging even for adults to discern what's real and what's fake. Also, kids have less experience in and context for evaluating news sources, so certain words or images that might immediately tell an adult that something is fake or biased might not have the same effect on kids.

According to Common Sense Media's report, News and America's Kids: How Young People Perceive and Are Impacted by the News, less than half of kids agree that they know how to tell fake news stories from real ones. When it comes to online news, the stats reveal a serious lack of faith:

Only about one in four kids who gets news online think that news posted online is "very accurate."

Only seven percent think news by people they don't know well is "very accurate."

Tweens are more likely than teens to think that news posted online is "very accurate."

The good news is that kids who get news from social media sites are trying to be careful readers. Most kids who get their news from social media say they pay "a lot" or "some" attention to the source the link on social media takes them to. And the majority who get news online say that when they come across information in a news story that they think is wrong, they "sometimes" or "often" try to figure out whether or not it's true.
