Hero for All: Martin Luther King, Jr.
Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., never backed down in his stand against racism. Learn more about the life of this courageous hero who inspired millions of people to right a historical wrong
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929. At the time in that part of the country, segregation—or the separation of races in places like schools, buses, and restaurants—was the law. He experienced racial prejudice from the time he was very young, which inspired him to dedicate his life to achieving equality and justice for Americans of all colors. King believed that peaceful refusal to obey unjust law was the best way to bring about social change.
King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, lead demonstrators on the fourth day of a historic fiveday march in 1965. Starting in Selma, Alabama, where local African Americans had been campaigning for the right to vote, King led thousands of nonviolent demonstrators 54 miles to the state capitol of Montgomery.
King was arrested several times during his lifetime. In 1960, he joined black college students in a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy interceded to have King released from jail, an action that is credited with helping Kennedy win the presidency.

Do not let the day end without having grown a bit, without being happy, without having risen your dreams.
Do not let overcome by disappointment.
Do not let anyone you remove the right to express yourself, which is almost a duty.
Do not forsake the yearning to make your life something special.
…Learn from those who can teach you.
Do not let life pass you live without that.

Because it is locked away inside the skull, the brain is hard to study. Looking at it requires finicky machines which use magnetism or electricity or both to bypass the bone. There is just one tendril of brain tissue that can be seen from outside the body without any mucking about of this sort. That is the retina. Look into someone’s eyes and you are, in some small way, looking at their brain.
This being so, a group of researchers decided to study the structure of the eye for signs of cognitive decline. Changes in the brain, they reasoned, might lead to changes in the nervous tissue connected to it. They focused on a part of the eye called the retinal nerve-fibre layer (RNFL). This is the lowest layer of the retina and serves to link the light-sensitive tissue above to the synapses which lead to the brain. The team’s results show that people with a thin RNFL are more likely to fail cognitive tests than those with a thick one. They are also more likely to suffer cognitive decline as they age.

Smoking damages eyes as well as lungs
Millions of people in the UK are putting their sight at risk by continuing to smoke, warn specialists. Despite the clear connection, only one in five people recognise that smoking can lead to blindness, a poll for the Association of Optometrists (AOP) finds. Smokers are twice as likely to lose their sight compared with non-smokers.
That is because tobacco smoke can cause and worsen a number of eye conditions. Cigarette smoke contains toxic chemicals that can irritate and harm the eyes. For example, heavy metals, such as lead and copper, can collect in the lens - the transparent bit that sits behind the pupil and brings rays of light into focus - and lead to cataracts, where the lens becomes cloudy.
Smoking can make diabetes-related sight problems worse by damaging blood vessels at the back of the eye (the retina). In the poll of 2,006 adults, 18% correctly said that smoking increased the risk of blindness or sight loss, while three-quarters (76%) knew smoking was linked to cancer. The AOP says stopping or avoiding smoking is one of the best steps you can take to protect your vision, along with having regular sight checks.

5 REASONS TO BE PROVEG
Many of the world’s most urgent problems share a common cause: our food choices. ProVeg is dedicated to raising awareness of how we can tackle these problems through diet.
OUR FOOD CHOICES ARE A MULTIPROBLEM SOLUTION
1. Health – Improve your health
It is now widely accepted that a plant-based diet offers numerous benefits compared with a diet centred on animal products. While animal-based diets carry several health risks, a rich and varied plant-based diet can offer prevention and treatment of a host of modern lifestyle diseases, including some forms of cancer and hypertension.
2. Animals – A better life for animals
Whether it is pigs, cows, chickens, or fish, industrial farming methods cause suffering to countless animals, all of whom are sentient beings and have complex social lives. A plant-based diet minimises the number of animals who live in these conditions, and is easier than ever thanks to the increasing variety of meat and dairy substitutes available.
3. Environment – Save the planet
A plant-based diet can have numerous positive effects on the environment, including the preservation of biodiversity, more sustainable use of resources, and combating climate change.
4. Justice – Help build a fairer world
As the world’s population expands, the question of how we can feed the world fairly and sustainably has never been more urgent. A plant-based diet can help to create a fairer world and a more sustainable food supply for all of us.
5. Taste – Enjoy delicious food
With the wide variety of vegetables available and the increasing number of vegan and vegetarian products on the market, a plantbased diet can be delicious and satisfying.

IMO, FAO to reduce marine plastic litter
In light of the global issue of marine plastic litter, IMO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) shake their hands and inked an agreement in order to prevent and reduce marine plastic litter coming from shipping and fisheries.
In fact, the agreement focuses on how the agencies will jointly execute the project and marks the next step towards many strategic partnerships anticipated under the project.
Through their collaboration, both sides will move forward and jointly implement the GloLitter Partnerships Project, initially launched im December 2019, with funding from Norway.
For the records, the GloLitter project will help developing countries to identify opportunities to prevent and reduce marine litter, including plastic litter, from within the maritime transport and fishery sectors, and to decrease the use of plastics in these industries.
"It will identify opportunities to re-use and recycle plastics. It will directly help to achieve one of the specific targets in the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 - to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution, by 2025.", as IMO noted in 1ts statement.
Moreover, IMO and FAO will now reach out to their respective fields to strengthen cooperation, not least private sector participation through a Global Industry Alliance. The agreement was signed on 14 April 2020.

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

A Minor Bird
I have wished a bird would fly away,
And not sing by my house all day;
Have clapped my hands at him from the door
When it seemed as if I could bear no more.
The fault must partiy have been in me.
The bird was not to blame for his key.
And of course there must be something wrong
In wanting to silence any song.
