A baby born in a Paris hospital to a mother with Covid-19 tested positive for the virus and developed symptoms of inflammation in his brain, said Dr. Daniele De Luca, who led the research team. The baby recovered without treatment and is “very much improved, almost clinically normal,” said the doctor, adding that the mother, who needed oxygen during the delivery, is healthy.

Since the pandemic began, there have been isolated cases of newborns who have tested positive for the coronavirus, but there has not been enough evidence to rule out the possibility that the infants became infected by the mother after they were born, experts said. In the Paris case, Dr. De Luca said, the team was able to test the placenta, amniotic fluid, cord blood, and the mother’s and baby’s blood.

The testing indicated that “the virus reaches the placenta and replicates there,” Dr. De Luca said. It can then be transmitted to a fetus, which “can get infected and have symptoms similar to adult Covid-19 patients.”

Are any foods safe to eat anymore? The fears and the facts

Food was once seen as a source of sustenance and pleasure. Today, the dinner table can instead begin to feel like a minefield. Is bacon really a risk factor of cancer? Will coffee or eggs give you a heart attack? Does wheat contribute to Alzheimer’s disease? Will dairy products clog up your arteries? Worse still, the advice changes continually. As TV-cook Nigella Lawson recently put it: “You can guarantee that what people think will be good for you this year, they won’t next year.”
This may be somewhat inevitable: evidence-based health advice should be constantly updated as new studies explore the nuances of what we eat and the effects the meals have on our bodies. But when the media (and ill-informed health gurus) exaggerate the results of a study without providing the context, it can lead to unnecessary fears that may, ironically, push you towards less healthy choices.
The good news is that “next year” you may be pleased to learn that many of your favourite foods are not the ticking time bomb you have been led to believe...

Uncontacted Amazon tribe has been threatened by illegal loggers

Remarkable close-up footage that appears to show an uncontacted tribesman in the Amazon rainforest has been released by an indigenous media group that wants to raise awareness of the threat posed by illegal loggers, miners and drug traffickers.

(...) The Awá have been described as the world’s most threatened tribe by the NGO Survival International, which has tracked killings by loggers, who surround and frequently encroach upon the group’s territory.

Many of the community have been forced to abandon the forest, but some remain in self-imposed isolation. Their existence has been called into question by commercial interests that want to move into the land, but the new footage has been cited as proof that they remain in the territory.

It was recorded by a member of a neighbouring tribe, the Guajajara, which is trying to defend one of the last pockets of intact forest in Maranhão, a massively deforested state in the north-east of Brazil.

''We hope this film produces something positive. We hope it makes an impact around the world to help protect our people and our forest,'' said Flay Guajajara, who shot the image while out hunting and released it through the Mídia Índia platform.

(...) Olimpio Guajajara, coordinator of the Guardians of the Amazon, said three of the group’s members have been murdered in this activity, which highlighted the need for more long-term support. He said: ''We Guardians are defending our people’s rights, defending the uncontacted Indians, and defending nature for all of us. We need the land to be protected for good."

Indigenous groups say successive governments have failed to adequately recognise their territorial rights and their role in protecting forests that are globally essential for carbon sequestration and natural habitats.

According to Survival International, loggers have been emboldened by the government and their camps can now be seen on the edge of Awá land.

Director Stephen Corry said: ''This video is further proof that the uncontacted Awá people really exist. And a glance at a satellite photo shows just how much danger they’re in. Loggers have already killed many of their relatives and forced others out of the forest"

HOW MUSIC STREAMING SERVICES ARE TAPPING INTO THE AI VIBE

Rajasimha Koppula

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the design, implementation and use of programs, machines, and systems that exhibit human intelligence. Furthermore, with its most important activities being knowledge representation, reasoning, and learning, AI encompasses a number of important sub- -areas, which include: voice recognition, image identification, natural language processing, expert systems, neural networks, planning, robotics, and intelligent agents. According to a McKinsey & Company study, in 2016, companies invested $26 to $39 billion in AI. In addition, since 2013, investments have increased by three times.

An overview of the music streaming industry

In 1999, the music industry market size was less than half of today. What provoked this growth, you ask? The answer is simple: the internet. The technological advancements of the internet grew at a rate of 200% around the globe between 2000–2018, taking the music industry to new heights.

According to the Financial Times, the internet played a catalyst role in online music streaming industry growth. Major music service providers, such as Spotify, Apple, Pandora, and Amazon are taking music services to the next level by integrating AI with their music streaming platforms.

Today, music streamingservicesarehelpingusersbyutilizing technology to understand customers’ tastes by using AI and recommending more comparable songs on a timely basis.

Traditionally, any business owner utilizes data analytic tools to diagnose, group, predict, and understand customer requirements to make an appropriate business change/service recommendation. For the music industry, due to the rapidly growing number of customers, and the wide variety of choices now available, traditional tools don’t cut it anymore. Incorporating AI and machine learning technologies into music streaming algorithms is quickly becoming the new norm. If a music service provider can’t ‘guess’ what a user wants to hear, the user will most likely switch to one that can.

What do nationalists believe in? (Part III)

Nationalists' primary belief is that people in similar societies benefit when they are united by shared values and a common belief system.

"Uniting people -- whether under flags, banners, anthems, or constitutions -- is conducive to a more robust civic society and stronger communities," Kassam said.

But Miller dismisses that as an "incoherent" ideology. "No one has ever been able to agree on what defines the nation. It is impractical because there is no feasible way to make governments overlap exactly with all the supposed nations in the world today," Miller said.

Nationalists are also populists and consider themselves sticking up for the common, working man against the elites and so-called globalists. There are voters in both US political parties receptive to that kind of messaging, and that's why the fiery populist rhetoric of Bernie Sanders and Trump during the 2016 campaign ended up appealing to overlapping groups of voters.

Nationalists are also extremely protectionist, preferring to look inward when it comes to matters of foreign affairs and trade. Trump's political positions have shifted all of his life, but the one constant has been his distrust of international trade agreements and his belief that they're ultimately bad for the United States.

"We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs," Trump said during his inaugural speech in January 2017. "Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength."

This type of thinking is typical of nationalists.

STAYING HOME OFFERS A CHANCE TO DECLUTTER, BUT WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN’T DONATE?

Taking on an overloaded closet or dusty boxes in the basement could provide more than just satisfaction of ending a long run of procrastination. In a time of rising stress levels due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the act of decluttering can come with a number of benefits. With Canadians being encouraged to stay home to help flatten the curve, many are taking the opportunity to tidy up and make progress in areas big and small.

Confluence of Cultures

A professional involved in a merchant marine career gets to meet and mingle with people of different cultures and nationalities. This helps the individual to understand and function better as a team player and learn the nuances of different cultures and traditions at the same time. This automatically increases adaptability and brings about more awareness about what goes and what doesn't in a different country.
