SEA-FEVER

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel"s kick and the wind”s song and the white sail's shaking,

And a grey mist on the sea”s face and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the seagulls crying.

I must down to the seas again

to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale”s way where the wind”s like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Vogue Magazine’s Complicated Relationship with Diversity

Edward Enninful, the new editor-in-chief of British Vogue, has a proven history of addressing diversity that many hope will be the start of an overhaul of the global Vogue brand.

In March, he responded sublimely when US President Donald Trump nominated Supreme Court judge Neil Gorsuch, who allegedly does not care much about civil rights: Enninful styled a shoot for his then employer, the New York-based W magazine, in which a range of ethnically diverse models climb the stairs of an imaginary "Supreme Court". In February, after Trump initiated the much-debated immigration ban, Enninful put together a video showcasing the various fashion celebrities who have immigrated into the US. Even before his first official day in Vogue’s Mayfair offices, Enninful had hired two English superstars of Jamaican descent in an attempt to diversify the team. Model Naomi Campbell and make-up artist Pat McGrath both share Enninful’s aim of championing fashion as a force for social change.

One can only hope that Enninful’s appointment is not a mere blip, but a move in the right direction on a long road to diversity for the global brand.

Is there a scientific explanation for
out-of-body experiences?

Imagine feeling as though you are floating above your body, looking down upon your physical self. Some argue that such out-of-body experiences (OBEs) prove that the conscious mind — or even the soul — can leave the body. Supporting this interpretation, people who have survived a near-death experience often recall experiencing this out-ofbody sensation — as if their spiritual essence had separated from their corporeal existence.

However, the scientific explanation for OBEs is more terrestrial. Neuroscientists and psychologists believe it has to do with neural processes going wrong. In those who come close to death, such as cardiac arrest survivors, it is the lack of oxygen to the brain, and the release of certain neurochemicals triggered by trauma, that interferes with the sensory functions that support our usual feelings of embodiment. People’s recollections of seeing themselves from above — such as observing surgeons working on their body — could be a form of hallucination or false memory, as they try to make sense of their experiences.

Researchers have induced out-of-body states in healthy volunteers simply by confusing their sensory systems. For instance, scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm asked volunteers to wear goggles that showed the perspective of a camera placed behind them (so that they could see themselves from behind). When a researcher prodded the camera with a baton at the same time as prodding the person’s chest, the volunteer had the sensation that they were floating behind their physical body. The fact it is possible to induce an OBE argues against more mystical explanations.

A new global crisis?

You drink a Coca-Cola, throw the bottle into the recycling bin... and forget about it. But it doesn’t disappear. Everything you own will one day become the property of the waste industry, a £250 bn global enterprise determined to extract every last penny of value from what remains. In the case of the United Kingdom (UK), some of the waste is kept in the country; but much of it — about half of all paper and cardboard, and twothirds of plastics — will be loaded on to container ships to be sent to Europe or Asia for recycling.

Or, at least, that’s how it used to work. Then, on the first day of 2018, China, the world’s largest market for recycled waste, essentially shut its doors. Under its National Sword policy, China prohibited 24 types of waste from entering the country, arguing that what was coming in was too contaminated. The policy shift was partly attributed to the impact of a documentary, Plastic China, which went viral before censors erased it from China’s internet. The film follows a family working in the country’s recycling industry, where humans pick through vast dunes of western waste. It is filthy, polluting work — and badly paid. The remainder is often burned in the open air. The family lives alongside the sorting machine, their 11-year-old daughter playing with a Barbie pulled from the rubbish.

National Sword was a huge blow1. Still, the waste has to go somewhere. The UK, like most developed nations, produces more waste than it can process: about 1.1 kg per person per day; the US, 2 kg.

There is cause for optimism, though: in December 2018, the UK government published a comprehensive new waste strategy. Among its proposals: a tax on packaging containing less than 30% recycled material and means to force companies to take responsibility for the plastic packaging they produce. They hope to force the industry to invest in recycling infrastructure at home.

Yet such is the torrent of humanity’s refuse that these efforts may not be enough. Recycling rates in the west are stable and packaging use is set to rise in developing countries, where recycling rates are low. If National Sword has shown us anything, it is that recycling — while needed — simply isn’t enough to solve our waste crisis.

Our Daily Bread

[1] Bread is the oldest food known to mankind. The trade of the baker is one of the oldest crafts in the world.

[2] Loaves and rolls have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. In the British Museum’s Egyptian galleries you can see actual loaves which were made and baked over 5,000 years ago.

[3] Bread is mentioned in the Bible many times. In Old Testament times, all the evidence points to the fact that bread-making, preparing the grain, making the bread and baking it, was the women’s work.

[4] Nowadays, bread is perhaps the most important item in our diet. It provides us with more energy value, more protein, more iron and more vitamin B1 than any other basic food.

[5] So, the next time you are about to bite into some fresh bread, remember you have a slice of history in your hand.

Roberto: Hey, Loreto. Got a minute?
Loreto: I’m going to a meeting off-site, but we can talk if you don’t
mind walking me to my car.
Roberto: Sure, okay. I just wanted to ask if you’re interested in carpooling to work. We only live a few blocks from each other.
Loreto: Thanks for asking, but I’m not sure carpooling would work
for me. Sometimes I run late in the morning and I wouldn’t want to
hold you up.
Roberto: We wouldn’t have to commute together every day, only
on those days that are convenient for both of us. Carpooling has its
advantages, too. In addition to doing our part for the environment,
we could use the high-occupancy carpool lanes. That’ll save time,
especially if there’s a lot of traffic congestion.
Loreto: Yeah, I guess that could cut down on our commute time.
Roberto: We also get preferential treatment for parking on the days
we carpool.
Loreto: How would it work? Do we set up a schedule and take
turns driving?
Roberto: Why don’t I swing by and pick you up tomorrow morning
and we can talk more about it?
Loreto: If you don’t mind picking me up en route, that would be
great. By the way, how do you know where I live?
Roberto: Oh, I asked around. See you tomorrow.

In food-rich Brazil, people go hungry as pandemic rages (Part III)

Because of the swelling ranks of the new poor, city officials now give out 10,000 free meals a day, an increase of one-third. In Rio, too, "The issue of food is one of extreme urgency,"said Bruno Dauaire, the secretary of social development and human rights in the state of Rio. "Not long ago we did not even talk about poverty and hunger in the city of Rio, and now we are confronting this issue,"said Dauaire.

NGOs try to make up for governments that are struggling financially and overwhelmed by the pandemic, but they are faced with much lower donations. "Those who help are helping less,"said Claudia Carletto, secretary of human rights and citizen issues in Sao Paulo. The Red Cross of Sao Paulo, which hands out 2,000 food baskets a day, says the cash donations it receives are down 99 percent. "People need more help and for longer stretches of time,"said Bruno Semino, head of that branch of the Red Cross. The lack of donations, he said, "has a major impact on our operations."

In 2020, Accion de la Ciudadania used to distribute 80, 000 to 100, 000 food baskets a month all over Brazil. This year, it is down to 8, 000 to 10, 000. "We operate where the government is absent,"said Afonso of Accion Ciudadana. "Unfortunately, in recent years the government is absent from many places."
