Are you ready for the glasses of the future? They're made by Google and are a cross between a normal pair of spectacles and a high-powered computer. They're called Google Glass and are being released this year. What do they do? Well, while wearing the glasses you can take photos of what you see, and you can send and receive e-mails, get directions from the in-built SatNav, make phone calls and search for things online. How do they work”? Simple! You can control the glasses using voice commands. So, to take a picture (for example) you just say, “Glass - take a photo”. The specs have a tiny screen that displays information in front of your eyes (the screen is at the top of the right lens so it doesn't block your vision). So, if you receive an e-mail, itllappear on the small screen, or ifyou search the internet, the results will also appear on the screen. Google thinks Glass will one day replace smartphones.

Visitors to Hawali generally arrive at Honolulu International Airport. Many travel to the hotels and beaches of Waikiki. And there they often remain. But there is much more to Honolulu than beaches and boutique shops. The Hawalian capital is home to a lot of cultural attractions and beautiful scenery.

The birthplace of Barack Obama, Honolulu today mixes the relaxed pace of Pacific Island life with the excitement, commerce - and problems - of a modern American city. Home to almost one million people, the Hawaiian capital still has the feel of a town rather than a metropolis, however. It's expensive - because everything that arrives here is subject to excise taxes. The huge variety of restaurants represent the cultural mix of Honolulu, with many Japanese, Chinese, Thai and other Asian Cuisines. In fact, Native Hawalians and Pacific Islanders are very much minority here.

Southern Europe’s Immigration

Test Immigrants have been making their way to Europe for tens of thousands of years. The first modern humans – the first real immigrants – came north from Africa through the Middle East. Since then, periodic waves of migrants have helped redefine Europe’s population, its food, its knowledge. After World War II, most migrants headed to northern Europe but as the south has prospered over the past 20 years, it has drawn in growing numbers of people looking for a better life. By the mid-2000s, migrants headed for southern Europe accounted for more than 60% of the continent’s new arrivals. They swung the hammers during Spain’s construction boom, changed diapers in Greece and worked Italy’s fields. European immigration policy has become more bureaucratic over the years. In south, where enforcement of rules has been more lax and informal economies are large, working illegally is often easier than getting proper permits. The economic crisis will slow the flow but is unlikely to undo the demographic shift, not least because the birthrate among immigrants is much higher than the general population’s. “If there’s a lesson that can be learned from the northern European experience, it’s that temporary migrants tend to remain,” says Joaquín Arango, professor of sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid. Here’s another: when a society marginalizes its newest members, trouble ensues. Southern Europe needed its immigrants. Now it needs to find a place for them.

Study: Thirdhand Smoke Could Cause Harm

A new study reveals that the so-called “thirdhand
smoke,” or the residue from cigarette smoke that lands
on surfaces after a smoker lights up, could be hazardous
to passers-by even well after the smoker has left the
[5] scene.
New research from the University of California
Riverside shows that the so-called “thirdhand smoke”
exposure harms organs in mice and increases symptoms
of hyperactivity — which suggests humans too might
[10] suffer similar negative consequences.
The researchers exposed lab mice to levels of
thirdhand smoke meant to imitate the levels humans
come into contact with in a smoking environment. They
found that the mice exhibited higher levels of lipids and
[15] fatty liver disease, as well as inflammation in their lungs.
The mice also had trouble healing wounds. Both of these
findings are found among people exposed to secondhand
smoke. Smokers also tend to take longer to heal their
wounds after a surgery.
[20] The researchers also noted increased levels of
hyperactivity in the mice, which they compared to similar
symptoms reported in children exposed to second and
thirdhand smoke. “It follows that children in environments
where smoking is, or has been allowed, are at significant
[25] risk for suffering from multiple short-term and longer health
problems, many of which may not manifest fully until
later in life,” the researchers conclude in the study,
published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Text
Civil societies can only thrive when damaging stereotypes are broken down. The difficulty is that stereotypes are sometimes hard to recognize because they are fixed beliefs. Learning to identify stereotypes is one of the first steps we must take to build a civil society. All of us face peer pressure when confronted with a joke which puts down a certain minority. It takes courage to raise objections to these jokes and pejorative names and to actively fight the prejudice and bigotry which they foster. It is important to stand up against injustice, and fight the discrimination, stereotypes, and scapegoating which have served as the precursors to persecution, violence, and genocide. After identifying stereotypes, we can work toward eliminating them from society. When stereotypes are eliminated, it will be easier to acknowledge and appreciate individual differences. When we live in a society that is open to cultural diversity and that values the contributions of all society members – regardless of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, race, life styles, and belief – we will be one step closer to living in a civil society.
