TEXTO:

Indigenous people and global warming

Forests on indigenous lands hold 37.7 billion tons

of CO2 worldwide. If they were destroyed, the carbon

released into the air would surpass global emissions of

vehicles for 29 years. Luckily, the Indians have been more

[5] effective than any other human group in combating

deforestation. These numbers are from a report released

by NGOs WRI (World Resources Institute) and RRI

(Rights and Resources Initiative).

Researchers of the two entities crossed forest

[10] preservation numbers from indigenous and traditional

people with data from the FAO (United Nations Food

and Agriculture) on forest biomass. Research was done

in 2013. According to the report, about one-eighth of the

tropical forests area today is within these areas.

[15] Compared to forests that are outside the Indigenous

jurisdiction, the land not in that area has displayed a

weak protection rate.

In the Brazilian Amazon, forests not in the

indigenous land have a deforestation rate 11 times higher.

[20] In the Guatemalan forests, home to Mayans

descendants, the protection rate is 20 times higher, and

in the rest of the Yucatan is 350 times higher —

Indigenous people are virtually the only type of protection

there. Part of the reason for this is that developing

[25] countries, home to most of the preserved forests, often

lack the resources to implement surveillance against

illegal deforestation, whether within or outside protected

areas.

It is often better to recognize the right of indigenous

[30] communities to land and give them autonomy to manage

an area than turn it into an ecological reserve and hire

guards. However, the report does not comment on the

proposed constitutional amendment 215, being debated

in the Brazilian Congress, providing the legislative power

[35] the right to demarcate indigenous lands, complicating

the process.

Hunger Games Review: Family Film Guide

Parent Concerns: There is definitely violence in this film. The central Hunger Games may not be as bloody and brutal as author Suzanne Collins describes in the novel, but there's a visceral reaction to seeing the kid-on-kid violence rather than conjuring it in your own imagination. The tributes kill each other in a host of ways, from spear, knife and arrow wounds to hand-to-hand battles that leave teens with their heads smashed in or necks snapped. The editing is quick and the shots never linger on anything overly graphic, but there is blood and twenty-two adolescents, aged 12-18, die in the annual blood sport pageant. Immature tweens, even if they've read the books, may not be ready to handle to the film just yet. A good rule of thumb: if they're not old enough to be reaped into the Hunger Games, they're probably not mature enough to see it.

WORLD´S BEST 10 CITIES

For globetrotting travelers, it’s easy to recognize a spectacular city. They are energetic, diverse destinations intent on preserving local heritage, revitalizing undervalued neighborhoods, and they possess distinct personalities that set them apart from other metropolises.

Whether it’s the city you’ve called home for years or one you only just stumbled upon during your travels, you know that the best cities are intriguing cultural centers that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

Kyoto, in Japan, returned for the second year in a row to the No. 1 spot on our World’s Best list. Readers called it the quintessential Japanese experience, offering visitors everything from history (in the form of spiritual shrines) to notable cuisine (shojin ryori) and encounters with the famed Geisha dancers.

Some of the world’s best cities evoke the romanticism of travel, such as Italy’s classic crowd-pleasers, Florence and Rome. Both have appeared on the Top 10 Overall list for ten consecutive years.

Perhaps most evident, however, are the cities that appeared on the list despite political and social turmoil. Charleston, South Carolina—the only domestic city on the overall list—has suffered greatly since the polls closed. And Jerusalem, the controversial capital of Israel, is at the crux of an ancient and ongoing conflict. Bangkok was likely bumped from the list in 2012 due to governmental unrest.

Because cities are, in many ways, a great convergence of people and ideas, it is inevitable that conflicts will arise. So we keep these cities, and their people, in our thoughts, while we celebrate their resilience and their virtues.

Where did your favorite city rank, and which ones should you put on your travel bucket list? These are the most dynamic, beloved cities across the globe.

Shoes with high heels are the fashion choice for many women around the world. However, a new study by Stanford University in the USA proves that wearing high heels over a long period of time can permanently injure the body. The study by a biomotion team from the University scanned the knees of healthy women as they walked at a normal pace in flat shoes, 1.5 inch heels and 3.5 inch heels. The results send a warning to women who want to wear high heels that they risk permanent damage to their knees. The researchers found that when women wear high heels, their knees are held in an awkward, bent position causing the joints to perform as though aged or damaged joints would – increasing the risk the condition known as osteoarthritis, which could require surgery.

Britain’s Daily Express newspaper reports a recent survey of 1,200 women that shows how popular high heels are. It said 93 per cent of women felt sexier and more feminine when they wore heels, 88 per cent said they considered themselves more stylish and 77 per cent said their heels made them feel slimmer. Most women prefer to ignore health warnings, and even the pain and discomfort of wearing heels, to look and feel good.

A British doctor, Tim Allardyce, said he regularly treats women with problems caused by wearing heels. “Because of the odd angle at which the feet are held in high-heeled shoes, it increases the downward pressure on the knees by 25 per cent, placing significant stress on the kneecaps, even when you’re standing still,” he explains. He added: “Standing and walking on the balls of your feet throws the skeleton out of its usual, healthy alignment, which means muscles and joints throughout the body have to compensate to maintain its centre of gravity and keep the body upright.”

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY WARNS OF GROWING TRAFFIC PROBLEM IN GERMANY

The agency's “Data on the Environment” report, released Tuesday, found that transport was the only sector in Germany that hadn't seen a drop in greenhouse gas emissions since 1990. Instead, the levels had actually increased.

According to the agency's data, transport is responsible for around 18 percent of the country's climate-damaging emissions. And the bulk of that amount is produced by vehicles on roads.

“We're moving in the wrong direction,” the agency's president, Maria Krautzberger, told reporters in Berlin.

Between 2000 and 2013, freight transport on German roads increased by almost a third, the report said. Krautzberger warned that there needed to be some “urgent” changes, with more efforts made to move goods across Germany and Europe by ship and rail, rather than by road. She added that there could be emissions limits set for trucks, as well as a truck toll for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons.
