On the Meaning of Being Chinese
Ethnically speaking, I feel I am complicated to classify, but who isn’t, right? To me, being Chinese-Brazilian in America means a history of living in three opposite cultures, and sometimes feeling that I did not belong in neither, a constant struggle that immigrants, and national citizens, face when their appearance is foreign to natives in the country. Jokingly, I say that I am Asian in America, Brazilian in China, and a “gringa” in Brazil. Nevertheless, I believe that dealing with these hard to reconcile extremes have somehow helped me in becoming more comfortable with my identity.

What is Corruption? Why Is It a Problem?
Corruption can mean several things for different people. In short, corruption means the practice of obtaining power, influence, or other personal gains through illegitimate means, often at others' expense. The more widespread and acceptable corrupt methods are in a given society, the more corrupt that society is said to be. Corruption has resulted to crises in many parts of the world, and those on top have used it to take advantage of others.

Unsinkable Ship
Naval architects never claim that a ship is unsinkable, but the sinking of the passenger and car ferry Estonia in the Baltic surely should have never happened. It was well designed and carefully maintained. It carried the proper number of lifeboats. It had been thoroughly inspected the day of its fatal voyage. Yet hours later, the Estonia rolled over and sank in a cold, stormy night. It went down so quickly that most of those on board, caught in their dark, flooding cabins, had no chance to save themselves: Of those that managed to scramble overboard, only 139 survived. The rest died of hypothermia before the rescuers could pluck them from the cold sea. The final death toll amounted to 912 souls. However, there were an unpleasant number of questions about why the Estonia sank and why so many survivors were men in the prime of life, while most of the dead were women, children and the elderly.
It is clear from the passage that the survivors of the accident:
Scientific literacy
Scientific literacy is the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and
processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural
affairs, and economic productivity. It also includes specific types of abilities.
Scientific literacy means that a person can ask, find, or determine answers to
questions derived from curiosity about everyday experiences. It means that a person
has the ability to describe, explain, and predict natural phenomena. Scientific literacy
entails being able to read with understanding articles about science in the popular
press and to engage in social conversation about the validity of the conclusions.
Scientific literacy implies that a person can identify scientific issues underlying national
and local decisions and express positions that are scientifically and technologically
informed. A literate citizen should be able to evaluate the quality of scientific
information on the basis of its source and the methods used to generate it. Scientific
literacy also implies the capacity to pose and evaluate arguments based on evidence
and to apply conclusions from such arguments appropriately.

TEXT I
Ever had the feeling your past is slipping away? There’s a simple trick that should reinforce your recollections.
Have you ever seen or heard something amazing – a scene in a film, a joke or a song – only to forget it later on? Instead of the crystal clear images you wanted to recall, you’re instead left with scraps of images and mangled sentences, or more frustratingly still, nothing at all. Even monumental events, like meeting a film star, can sometimes fade surprisingly quickly.
There may be a disarmingly simple way to cement those memories, however. According to research by Chris Bird at the University of Sussex, all it requires is a few seconds of your time and a bit of imagination. Bird recently asked some students to lie in a brain scanner and view a series of short clips from YouTube (involving, for example, neighbors playing practical jokes on each other). Straight after some of the clips, they were given 40 seconds to replay the scene in their minds and describe it to themselves. For the others, they just moved onto a new video.
It turned out that simply describing the event to themselves massively improved their chances of remembering it accurately a week or so later: on average, they were able to remember twice as many details. Bird also found that his brain scans appeared to reflect the strength of the memory: when the activity during their descriptions closely mirrored the activation as they watched the video itself, the students seemed to have built particularly strong foundations for later recall.
That may, perhaps, be a sign of just how much effort and detail they were imagining as they described the scene. It could also be that it allowed the students to peg the events to other memories; one student compared a character in the clips to James Bond, for instance – instantly making him more memorable.
In other words, if you want to make sure something sticks in your mind, just take a minute or so to describe it to yourself, consciously and deliberately picking the most vivid details.
Bird can see how it might be particularly important in the courtroom. ―The findings have implications for any situation where accurate recall of an event is critical, such as witnessing an accident or crime,‖ he says. ―Memory for the event will be significantly improved if the witness rehearses the sequence of events as soon as possible afterwards.‖ But it could be equally helpful for anyone hoping to cling to something worth remembering.

Migrant crisis: Hamburg uses shipping containers as homes
Dust blows across the path as women carry what possessions they have in flimsy blue bin bags. One calls out to a little boy on a bicycle but her words are lost in the sound of loud drilling and hammering.
Workmen are still building this site and these are some of Hamburg's newest refugee homes, with room for just over 200 people. All around are converted shipping containers: functional metal boxes painted red and stacked two storeys high. New tenants are already moving in. A family invites us inside. Yusef is an energetic young man who introduces his wife, a shy pregnant woman in a bright pink headscarf, and his little girl. "I didn't like life in Iraq," he tells me. "Maybe I'm killed, maybe my children are killed, maybe my wife is killed. In the markets there are car bombers, in the hospital there are car bombers." The family is waiting to hear whether Germany will give them a home for the long term. It can take up to five months for an asylum application to be processed, although the government has promised to reduce the average waiting time to three months. For now, Yusef and his family live in a single room and share a kitchen and bathroom with the other tenants. His oldest child is now in a German school. He hopes to learn German then get a job. As Yusef makes tentative plans for the future, the authorities in Hamburg are struggling. It's estimated that about 400 refugees and migrants arrive here every day.
