The Jurutauí Legend

Jurutauí was the bird with the most beautiful song in the

forest and, because it sang so melodiously, it was truly admired

by the other birds. One day Jurutauí saw the moon shining

splendidly and fell deeply in love with her. Then, to be heard by

its muse, it flew to the highest tree to sing love songs through

the night, filling the forest with the most devoted sounds.

Jurutauí couldn’t accept such a distance from its lover and

flew higher and higher, trying to reach it. But the power of

gravity could not be overcome. After a long struggle Jurutauí

fell straight to the ground. Dizzy, it tried to recover and sing its

beautiful song, but only a strident and terrible screech came

from its throat and echoed through the forest. The other birds

surrounded Jurutauí and mourned for the loss of the most

beautiful birdsong in the forest. Now when the forest echoes

with raucous and sad notes, everyone knows that it’s because

Jurutauí is singing.

Antony’s lines from Act III, Scene 2 of Julius Caesar

[1] Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;

I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.

The evil that men do lives after them;

The good is often interred with their bones;

[5] So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus

Has told you Caesar was ambitious:

If it were so, it was a grievous fault,

And grievously has Caesar answered it.

Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest–

[10] For Brutus is an honourable man;

So are they all, all honourable men–

Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral.

He was my friend, faithful and just to me:

But Brutus says he was ambitious;

[15] And Brutus is an honourable man.

He has brought many captives home to Rome

Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:

Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?

When the poor have cried, Caesar has wept:

[20] Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:

Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;

And Brutus is an honourable man.

You all did see that on the Lupercal

I thrice presented him a kingly crown,

[25] Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?

Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;

And, sure, he is an honourable man.

I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,

But here I am to speak what I do know.

[30] You all did love him once, not without cause:

What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?

O judgment! you are fled to brutish beasts,

And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;

My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,

[35] And I must pause till it come back to me.

The Giant African snail (Achatina fulica) is a major pest in tropical countries. Current control methods involve the use of slug pellets (metaldehyde) but they are ineffective, therefore new methods of control are needed. We investigated whether A. fulica is susceptible to the gastropod parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, which has been developed as a biological control agent for slugs and snails in northern Europe. We exposed A. fulica to P. hermaphrodita applied at 30 and 150 nematodes per cm2 for 70 days and also assessed feeding inhibition and changes in snail weight. We show that unlike the susceptible slug species Deroceras panormitanum, which is killed less than 30 days of exposure to P. hermaphrodita, A. fulica is remarkably resistant to the nematode at both doses. Also P. hermaphrodita does not reduce feeding in A. fulica nor did it have any effect on weight gain over 70 days. Upon dissection of infected A. fulica we found that hundreds of P. hermaphrodita had been encapsulated, trapped and killed in the snail’s shell. We found that A. fulica is able to begin encapsulating P. hermaphrodita after just 3 days of exposure and the numbers of nematodes encapsulated increased over time. Taken together, we have shown that A. fulica is highly resistant to P. hermaphrodita, whichcould be due to an immune response dependent on the snail shell to encapsulate and kill invading parasitic nematodes.

Abstract
Skipping breakfast can be potentially harmful because breakfast consumption is considered one of the important health-related behaviors that benefit physical and mental health. As the rate of depression has increased recently, we investigated the association between the frequency of eating breakfast and depression in adults. We obtained the data from the 2013 Korean Community Health Survey; a total of 207,710 survey participants aged 20 years or over were studied. Participants were categorized into three groups by the frequency of breakfast consumption as follows: “seldom,” “sometimes,” and “always.” We performed a multiple logistic regression to investigate the association between breakfast consumption and depressive mood. Subgroup analyses were conducted by stratifying socioeconomic variables controlling for variables known to be associated with depressive symptoms. Participants who had breakfast seldom or sometimes had higher depressive symptoms than those who always ate breakfast (“seldom”: OR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.36–1.52; “sometimes”: OR = 1.32, 95% CI 1.23–1.40). Subgroup analyses showed that this association was more marked in those who were 80 years or older, those who had low household income, or those with elementary school education level or less. The result of this study suggests that lack of breakfast consumption is associated with depression among adults with different socioeconomic factors.

The latest software update for iPhone 6 handsets is rendering the devices useless if it detects repairs not carried ________ by Apple. The problem is known as “error 53” and has appeared in Apple products before. The Guardian reports that users’ phones were disabled after the Touch ID home button was repaired by a non-Apple engineer. Apple has confirmed that the error message is a “security measure” taken to prevent fraudulent transactions. “We take customer security very seriously and error 53 is the result of security checks designed to protect our customers. iOS checks that the Touch ID sensor in your iPhone or iPad correctly matches your device’s other components”, it said in a statement. “If iOS finds a mismatch, the check fails and Touch ID, including for Apple Pay use, is disabled. This security measure is necessary to protect your device and prevent a fraudulent Touch ID sensor ________ being used. If a customer encounters error 53, we encourage them to contact Apple Support.” In its report, the Guardian cites the experiences of a freelance photographer, Antonio Olmos, who says the problem occurred on his phone after he upgraded its software. “When Olmos, who says he has spent thousands of pounds on Apple products ________ the years, took it to an Apple store in London, staff told him there was nothing they could do, and that his phone was now junk”, the paper reported. Many iPhone 6 customers have been discussing error 53 on-line. At Apple’s discussion forums, one user named wallihall wrote: “With this update I’m unable to use the phone, and still have to pay for the phone itself. I did get the front screen replaced, and I understand that it’s now considered ‘tampered with’, but at least let me use my iPhone ________the old iOS system... I can’t retrieve old photos or important documents I once had”. Apple told the paper that iPhone software checks whether any repairs were authorised by Apple. A spokeswoman said: “When an iPhone is serviced by an unauthorised repair provider, faulty screens or other invalid components that affect the touch ID sensor could cause the check to fail if the pairing cannot be validated.”

According to the text, analyze the following items:

I - Apple’s customers are feeling unsafe since their iPhones are being hacked.
II - Error 53 is nothing else but a security check.
III - Apple’s latest operating system disables the handset if it’s been repaired by a third party.

Roman documents discovered

We often think that the best information from the Roman world comes from Egypt, where the dryness preserves papyri. However, in Britain the reverse conditions occur. At Vindolanda – a Roman fort located two miles behind Hadrian’s Wall – the humidity preserved wooden writing tablets that were thrown into a bonfire when the fort was evacuated in CE 105.

These wooden tablets were one of the most important discoveries made in Roman Britain in the 20th century.

They were used not for grand writings but for memoranda and accounts, so they provide the best insight into life in the Roman army found anywhere in the world. One of the tablets says:

Octavius to Candidus: “I need money. I have bought 5,000 bushels of grain, and unless you send me some money, I shall lose my deposit and be embarrassed”.
