Is bad luck the leading cause of cancer?

"Most cancers are caused by random mistakes in the genetic code when cells divide out of the blue, new research shows," the Daily Mail reports. But this is an oversimplification of research that looked at the role spontaneous random mutations play in the development of certain cancers.

It's well known that environmental and hereditary factors are the cause of many cancers. This study looked at the influence of a third factor: random genetic mutations that occur by chance as the body's cells repeatedly divide.

Researchers analyzed cancer registry data from 69 countries worldwide to estimate the proportion of cancers that could be down to chance. They estimated just over a third of cancers worldwide could be down to chance mutations.

But the research has two key limitations, both of which the researchers openly acknowledge. First, these figures are only estimates and may not be accurate. And second, it would be a mistake to think cancers can only have one cause. A combination of all three factors – environmental, hereditary and luck – could all contribute towards a specific cancer risk.

One of our belter-known teachers, Mr. Robinson, was called by the faculty director soon after the students had taken mid-term examinations.

“This is serious,"said the director. “You know how | feel about cheating. Well, a couple of your students have just taken the same examination and they've turned in the same answers to the first nine of the ten questions. Can you account for that?"

“Why, certainly “answered the quick-thinking teacher. “Those are two of my smartest boys and they studied together so they memorized the same answers.”

“You may be right, 'replied the director. "Il believe such a possibility does exist. It's the tenth and last question that bothers me.”

"How so?"asked the teacher.

“See for yourself, “said the director. And he handed the examination papers to the teacher. The first of the students had answered the question by writing: "I don't know what this question means.” And the other had written: “Neither do I".

The Amazon rainforest is burning at a scary rate. French President Emmanuel Macron said the record number of fires is an "international crisis". There has been an 85 per cent increase in fires this year. Mr Macron said urgent action is needed. He said the fires should be top ofthe agenda atthe G7 summit of world leaders. He tweeted about how serious the fires are. He wrote: "Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain
forest - the lungs which produce 20% of our planet's oxygen - is on fire. It is an international crisis.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the fires an “acute emergency”. She said they were "shocking". She added that the fires threatened Brazil, its neighbors, and the whole world. The UK leader Boris Johnson called the fires "hearibreaking". He said: We stand ready to provide whatever help we can to bring them under control and help protect one of Earth's greatest wonders." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: "In the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected.”

Assigning female genders to digital assistants such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa is helping entrench harmful gender biases, according to a UN agency.

Research released by Unesco claims that the often submissive and flirty responses offered by the systemsto many queries – including outright abusive ones – reinforce ideas of women as subservient.

“Because the speech of most voice assistants is female, it sends a signal that women are obliging, docile and eager‐to‐ please helpers, available at the touch of a button or with a blunt voice command like ‘hey’ or ‘OK’”, the report said.

“The assistant holds no power of agency beyond what the commander asks of it. It honours commands and responds to queries regardless of their tone or hostility. In many communities, this reinforces commonly held gender biases that women are subservient and tolerant of poor treatment.”

The Unesco publication was entitled “I’d Blush if I Could”; a reference to the response Apple’s Siri assistant offers to the phrase: “You’re a slut.” Amazon’s Alexa will respond: “Well, thanks for the feedback.”

The papersaid such firms were “staffed by overwhelmingly male engineering teams” and have built AI (Artificial Intelligence) systems that “cause their feminised digital assistants to greet verbal abuse with catch‐me‐if‐you‐can flirtation”.

Saniye Gülser Corat, Unesco’s director for gender equality, said: “The world needs to pay much closer attention to how, when and whether AI technologies are gendered and, crucially, who is gendering them.”
