Islamic State’s destruction of Palmyra temple confirmed by satellite photo
Satellite images have confirmed the destruction of a Roman-era temple in the Syrian city of Palmyra, a United Nations agency said, after the hardline Islamic State group claimed responsibility for blowing up the structure a week ago.
Islamic State detonated explosives in the ancient Baal Shamin temple on August 25, an act that cultural agency UNESCO has called a war crime aimed at wiping out a symbol of Syria’s diverse cultural heritage.
The temple of Bel stood just outside the main area of the ancient city, whose column-lined principal street leads to its gate.
Its richly decorated central shrine area, or cella, was extremely well preserved.
An analysis of an image taken in June and others taken several days ago show the obliteration of the temple in the central desert city, the Geneva-based United Nations Institute for Training and Research said in a statement.
“We confirm the destruction of the main building, while surrounding columns seem to be less affected.”
Islamic State captured Palmyra, an oasis town and former trading centre in Syria’s central desert, from government forces in May.
Photographs published by IS last week showed a pile of rubble on the site of that temple.
Its destruction was condemned by UNESCO, which lists Palmyra as a World Heritage Site, as a war crime.
The head of the UN cultural agency, Irina Bokova said Palmyra’s art and architecture was “a symbol of the complexity and wealth of the Syrian identity and history.”
Two weeks ago Islamic State beheaded Khaled al-Asaad, who was the city’s chief archaeologist for decades, and hung his body from a lamp post.
Islamic State, which controls most of eastern Syria and the central desert, has previously destroyed ancient monuments as well as Christian and Muslim holy sites in neighbouring Iraq.

What is behind a student’s choice for becoming a doctor?
Purpose: To determine the reasons for choosing the medical profession by interviewing freshmen medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo and investigating their socio-economic and psychological profiles, as well as to determine whether there are gender differences.
Method: One hundred and sixty three freshmen medical students answered a questionnaire regarding their socio-economical profile. Of those, 30 female and 30 male students underwent a face-to-face interview regarding the career choice, the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) and the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF). The results were analyzed qualitatively and by Mann-Whitney, X2, Fisher’s Exact, and rp coefficient tests.
Results: Most students were middle class, catholic, and had physicians in their families. Students of both genders had made an: early choice of the medical career and persistence in taking exams many times, even after being discouraged. They also showed an awareness of the difficulties and limitations in developing their careers. The study revealed a strong valuation of the humanistic aspects of medicine; openness to new experiences; a deep personal identification with the choice of profession; a critical need for fulfillment in their careers; and conscious and unconscious desires to help people, without being narcissistic. Female students were more sensitive (P < 0.001) and less imaginative (P = 0.005) than male students, who were more utilitarian and less grounded; female students tended to present greater emotional maturity while male students presented a greater tendency towards competition, and were more ambitious.
Conclusions: Students of both genders have similar socio-economical profiles and features regarding their motivations for choosing the medical profession. Slight differences were found regarding some psychological aspects.
Keywords: Medical students. Personality. Career choice. Gender. Education.

Malala Yousafzai
By Mezon Almellehan
April 16, 2015
Champion of education
I’M 16 years old and from Dara’a in Syria. I fled to Jordan with my Family two years ago.
Spending time with Malala Yousafzai made me stronger. I didn’t know her before meeting her in Za’atari camp last year, but I understand she suffered, and yet continues to fight for what she believes in – for rights of children and for their education. She is an inspiration for me.
When it comes to continuing our education as refugees, I am on the front lines with my friends, speaking to other girls throughout the camp on the importance of going to school. My mother and father are always encouraging me. I saw this in Malala too, and her close relationship with her mother and father.
I’ve always loved learning and education, but since I fled with my Family, these views have grown stronger. I have seen too much wrong to not use my voice. Malala has shown that education is crucial for laying a foundation for girls and boys to have secure lives.
I know no matter what I go through today, it will make me a stronger person for tomorrow. Rather than giving up, my friends and I will continue to think positively and try to make our community better. Girls need to learn to take care of themselves, because if they don’t, nobody will. Our lives are completely diferente now – we’ve gone from living in homes to surviving in tents in refugees camps. Education is the only way to regain our spirit and control over our lives.
I was so honored to be in Oslo to watch Malala be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. To see a Young woman recognized with such an award made me realize that yes, I can make a difference, and I have to continue to fight for what I believe in – that all girls and boys can bring change to our world.

PASSAGE 2
Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through
promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious
diseases.
Overall, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations
[05] can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world.
Public health professionals try to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing
educational programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research – in contrast to
clinical professionals like doctors and nurses, who focus primarily on treating individuals after they become sick
or injured. Public health also works to limit health disparities. The largest part of public health is promoting
