CAGED BIRD
Maya Angelou
A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

Asia architects use green solutions to cool buildings
In many subtropical countries across Asia, such as Indonesia and the Philippines, air conditioning is increasingly being considered a necessity. But one architecture firm specializes in “bioclimatic architecture", says it could make air conditioning units redundant. By connecting with the local topography, climate, and vegetation, as well as cleverly manipulating a building's orientation, the firm can naturally create a comfortable indoor climate.
In cooperation with the World Bank, Charles Gallavardin, director of an architecture firm in Asia, built an apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City, which houses 350 families in an impoverished neighborhood. "We try to avoid big glass façades facing east or west, because that would make the building like an oven in a tropical climate," he says. "If you work with the main wind stream and have smart sun protection, you can do it -- you really can design buildings that need no air conditioning in a hot place like Vietnam." Gallavardin explains that a typical bioclimatic building is naturally about 5 Celsius cooler than the outside temperature, with natural ventilation and the ceiling fan doing the rest of the work.
"It is crucial for all new building designs in cities to encompass bioclimatic architectural features," Myles McCarthy, director of implementation at the Carbon Trust consultancy and research firm, tells CNN. "As demands in Asian cities for buildings -- both domestic and commercial -- increases, and the need for higher density living continues to climb with urban populations, it will be crucial to ensure this growth does not drive energy and water consumptions higher."

Dim light — or alternatively, staring into the

make your eyes work so hard they hurt. But there is no
evidence that these practices cause long-term damage.
[5] The TV myth may have started in the 1960s, and at
that time, it may have been true. Some early color TV
sets emitted high amounts of radiation that could have
caused eye damage, but this problem has long been
remedied, and today’s TV and computer monitors are

Of course, a lot of TV watching can cause eye
strain and fatigue, particularly for those sitting very close
and/or watching from odd angles. But there is an easy
cure for eye strain and fatigue: turning off the TV and
[15] getting some rest. With a good night’s sleep, tired eyes
should quickly return to normal.
If you or your child tend to sit so close to the
computer or TV that it hurts the eyes, it may be a good
idea to get checked for nearsightedness. However,
[20] sitting too close does not create a need for glasses
even if getting glasses can remedy the habit.
About some former TV sets, it’s correct to say that they

What selfies really tell us about ourselves
Psychologists, technologists and behavioral economists differ in their interpretations of the selfie and the risks people are prepared to take socially and physically to snap them. But there is general agreement that selfies are a form of expression that may reveal more than the taker intended, no matter how flattering the filter used.
“We are so bombarded by media telling us how we should look and how we should be,” stated Jacquelyn Morie, a researcher at the University of Southern California. “With selfies you have this authority and autonomy that you don’t have in other parts of your life.” She said selfies are essentially avatars and foresees a day when they will be constructed even more to our liking. As we conduct moreof our life online she suspects they will become more how we see ourselves than our real selves. Of course, selfies can also create a historical record of our life, if maybe a little better than reality. They show the world what you are doing and who you are with and how incredibly fun it all is. You often hear the refrain, “Selfies or you don’t exist,” which may explain some people’s compulsion to document their actions even if doing so diminishes their experience and engagement in the real world.
The need to be recognised, or even adored, is perhaps why so many have become their own Hollywood directors, attaching cameras to sticks and sometimes drones to improve the production value of their lives. Recent selfie-stick bans have been interpreted by some who study the selfie phenomenon as more a cultural movement in favour of authenticity than the elimination of a possible safety threat. There’s also the argument that rather than conferring power, selfies transfer control to viewers because in the end they are the ones who decide whether to post an encouraging or insulting comment, press “like” or ignore your existence all together.
Moreover, as facial recognition software continues to improve, frequent selfie takers may also be giving away their very identity. The more you post pictures of yourself online, the better companies, government agencies and criminals can identify you, not only online but sitting in a restaurant or walking down the street.

She just wants to be beautiful
She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits
She craves attention, she praises an image
She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor
Oh, she don’t see the light that’s shining
Deeper than the eyes can find it
Maybe we have made her blind
So she tries to cover up her pain and cut her woes away
Cause cover girls don’t cry after their face is made
But there’s hope that’s waiting for you in the dark
You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are
And you don’t have to change a thing,
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful,
we’re stars and we’re beautiful

Bilingual Education for the 21st Century
Bilingual education in the 21st century must face the complexity brought about by the freer movement of people, services, and goods that characterizes our more globalized and technological world. In the second half of the 20th century, bilingual education grew around the world as a way to educate children who didn't speak the state's language or, in some cases, to recapture the heritage language of a group. This in itself was an innovation over the use of bilingual education only to educate the children of the elite.
In the 21st century, however, the complex and dynamic links created by technology and globalized markets, coupled with the importance of English and other “big” languages, challenge our old conceptions of bilingual education. UNESCO in 1953 declared that it was axiomatic that the child's native language be used to teach children to read, but basic literacy, even in one's own language, is insufficient to be a world citizen in the 21st century.
It has been predicted that by 2050, English will be accompanied by Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and Urdu, as the world's big languages, ordered not only with English at the top as it has been up to now, but with an increasing role for the other four “big” languages. Countries throughout the world are providing options to their children to be schooled in two or more languages. The European Union, for example, has recently adopted a policy of “Mother Tongue + 2” encouraging schools throughout the EU to develop children's trilingual proficiency. For those purposes, a model of teaching is being promoted that encourages the use of the languages other than the child's mother tongue in subject instruction. Tech Companies Struggle With How to Curtail Offensive Speech
No more hands off
Internet firms are moving away from the long-held position that they didn’t want to monitor expression on their sites too closely, Irina Raicu, director of the Internet Ethics Program at Santa Clara University, said.
“The companies are stuck in the middle and no longer trying to avoid responsibility in a way that I think they were even a few years ago when they were saying we are just neutral platforms”, Raicu said. “They are increasingly taking a more open role in determining what content moderation looks like”.
It’s not just in the U.S. where the internet companies are having to make hard decisions about speech. The firms are also grappling with extreme speech in other languages.
Comments on Facebook have been linked to violence in places like Myanmar and India. A recent article by the Reuters news agency reports that negative messages about MyanMar’s Rohingya minority group were throughout its site.
Some call on social media companies to do more to target and take down hate messages before they lead to violence.
“If Facebook is bent on removing abusive words and nudity, they should be focused on removing these words as well”, said Abhinay Korukonda, a student from Mumbai, India, who is studying at the University of California, Berkeley. “This comes under special kinds of abusive terms. They should take an action. They should definitely remove these”.
